In the face of the looming threat of catastrophic climate change, any human agent can point to a solution that demands no sacrifice from it. But if each proceeds according to its preferred solution, the problem won't be solved. We thus need one authoritative allocation of responsibilities–ideally one that can be defended as morally salient and legally mandatory. The Oslo Principles provide the basic idea for such a solution, which can be extended from governments to sub-national entities and individuals.
